The largest among the churches that recognize the primacy of the Bishop of Rome, the Pope, is the Latin Church in the Holy Land. It has about 50,000 faithful - 99 percent of which are Arabic speaking - to which are added almost as many Latin Catholic immigrants from the Philippines, from Sudan, from India and Europe. Led by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, for seven centuries the Church has benefitted from the constant presence of the Franciscans, to whom the custody of the holy places has been entrusted since 1342, and some hundred religious orders and congregations of diverse origins. The Latin Church promotes many works, from hospitals to support facilities for the disabled, orphans and elderly, and 116 schools for a total of about 64,000 students of every level up to university. Since 1955, as a unique feature in the Church of the Holy Land, the Latin Patriarchate has created a vicariate for Hebrew-speaking Christians which counts about 500 people distributed in 7 parishes.
